Joseph is right: for any purchase, you can ask for the receipt and the official form that you then have the German border officials stamp for you. The next time you return to the same store, you present the form and receive your VAT.

Marktkauf may appear easier or may actually be more geared toward this because it's just immediately on the other side of the border.

I am not sure what you mean, but I shop a lot in Freiburg

take the car cross the border into Switzerland stamp my VAT and go back to collect the money. I think many who live outside the EU can and do it. All you need is to ask in the shop you buy for the form, if they do not want to give you one go shop somewhere else.
